    Introduction

After subscribing, all members are asked to introduce themselves right away. Just send your intro message to the list at AboutPetSitting@YahooGroups.com

Members are asked to sign each of their messages to the list with their name AND location. If you have a business name that would also be appreciated as part of your signature.

If you are researching pet sitting or just starting a new business and have questions PLEASE check out the list resources, files section and message archives before posting your questions to the list. We have many experienced sitters who are happy to help but you must help yourself as well.

If the owner and moderators of APS feel your posts are less than professional in tone, your messages will be set to be moderated WITHOUT NOTICE and your messages will not be delivered to the list until they are approved. Additionally if the list owner feels, for any reason, you are a detriment to the list you will be set to moderation and possibly banned from the list. The larger membership's enjoyment of the list is at all times a higher priority than any single individual's membership; if in the opinion of the list owner an individual member presents or becomes a disruptive focus, that member can and will be unsubscribed with or without notice or recourse.

    Important Note:

This list is archived, ergo all information posted here will be accessible to the list membership at any given time. Please keep this in mind before posting any information you might not wish to be made public. List Owners hold no responsibility for the content of any message posted to the APS list.

    Thank You,
    Marianne,
    APS List Owner

    What is an Email List?

A mailing list allows groups of people to participate in a discussion by sending email regarding a certain topic to each other easily. Instead of emailing everyone individually, subscribers of a mailing list can send one email to one address, which will then automatically send the message to everyone else who is subscribed to that list. For our list, the address that you send emails to is AboutPetSitting@yahoogroups.com.

    List Subscription Options Through YahooGroups

The following list subscription options are available to read and/or recieve list messages through YahooGroups. You can change the way you recieve list messages by logging into YahooGroups and clicking on "Members". Find your name and on the right side of the screen you can change your setting.

    • MAIL: Every email that is sent to the list is sent immediately to you.
    • DIGEST: You will get a few emails each night that contain all the emails sent to the list during the day.
    • WEB ONLY/NO MAIL: You will recieve no email at all. With this option you can view all of the list messages in the archives by logging into YahooGroups and going to the AboutPetSitting list. This option is good for times when you are very busy and can not keep up with the volume of messages being sent to your email box. It is also useful as a temporary measure when you go away on vacation. There is no need to unsubscribe from the list because this option prevents any messages being delivered to your mail box. You do not need to be set to "Web Only" to be able to read messages at YahooGroups on the web so if you are away and have access to the web you can still read list messages.     << Back

Accessing the APS Site on the Web

Getting to the APS site at YahooGroups on the web to access files, messages, archives etc:

    FIRST

Go to the YahooGroups Web site at http://groups.yahoo.com

    THEN

When you get there on the left side you will see a box that says "Registered users". In the box that says Yahoo ID type in your Yahoo User ID. NOT your email address. JUST your Yahoo User ID. For instance, my Yahoo User ID is "feathersnpaws".

    THEN:

Type in your password that you picked when you signed up to Yahoo Groups and then click "Sign In".

    THEN:

On the next screen you will see on the left side it will say "My Groups". Click on "AboutPetSitting".

Now you're into APS! On the left side of the screen you will see all that APS has to offer including the messages, files, databases, member listing and more.

    OR

If you do not yet have a Yahoo ID you can use the YahooGroups wizard at: http://groups.yahoo.com/convwiz.     << Back

    NETIQUETTE RULES

FOR THE ABOUT PET SITTING EMAIL LIST:

When you first start posting messages to the list, you may feel shy. That's good -- it's a sign that you're concerned about the impression you're going to make on a bunch of people you've never met. Fortunately, most email list readers are there in the first place because they're friendly people who enjoy interacting with others. Here are some hints on making our list run smoothly:

    • Use descriptive and specific subject lines. This helps others decide whether your particular words of wisdom relate to a topic they care about. Always check the subject line BEFORE you send the message and ask yourself if it appropriately reflects the topic of your post. Often as threads go on the subject changes and you may need to change your subject line.
    • If you are sending a message to the list that is Not Pet Sitting Related Please put NPSR in the subject line
    • Try not to post comments that don't add anything to the discussion. When you're just cruising through a thread in a leisurely manner, it's very annoying to read through a lot of "hear, hear"'s and "I agree"'s or "thank you"'s. When you're actually trying to find information, it's a pain in the neck. So if you wish to send these types of greetings, do so to the person via their private email address. DO NOT just use the "reply" key as your message will automatically be sent to the list. Do a copy and paste of the person's email address in the "TO" field of your email program instead. In a nut shell : When appropriate, use private email instead of posting to the group.
    • SPAMming is not allowed. SPAM is loosely defined as sending unsolicited email. It is also a violation of Yahoo Groups own policies.
    • When typing in URL's or web site addresses make sure you enter the entire address as in http://www.subjectlinehere.com this makes it a clickable link in most cases.
    • Decisions by the list moderators are final and abiding. If any of the list moderators tell you to drop a topic, please do so.
    • Try to include a quote from a SMALL portion of the message you are replying to and use quotation marks to indicate that it is a quote from a previous post. This will help other readers to recall what the conversation was about. DO NOT quote the entire message unless it is appropriate. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too." Remember to delete any signatures, or headers and footers that are automatically attached by YahooGroups. Also remember that YahooGroups puts your email address at the beginning of each message so when you are cleaning up messages to send to the list make note of these and delete them or place them appropriately so that the list readers will know which statements were made by whom.
    • If you are new to the list or have a specific question that you think MAY have been discussed previously, take the time to do a search in the message archives at YahooGroups and read what was said on the topic previously.
    • When someone writes something that makes you mad (and someone will), resist the impulse to flame back. One angry response can beget a long and nasty flame war. Phrase your postings politely. Cursing is frowned upon . If you want to express a strong opinion, cute euphemisms and made-up expletives are usually acceptable. Be careful about posting late at night or any time you're tired, sick, or having a terrible day. Your judgment may not be at its best. When in doubt, hold off until you feel better.
    • If your posting is only of interest to a specific geographic area, and the discussion seems like it will be an ongoing thread, try to send your message privately to all those who pertain to that discussion.
    • If you crosspost messages to multiple groups, include the name of the groups at the top of the mail message with an apology for any duplication.
    • When replying to a message posted to a discussion group, check the address to be certain it's going to the intended location (individual person or the list). It can be very embarrassing if you reply incorrectly and post a personal message to the entire discussion group that was intended for an individual.
    • Always ask the author's permission to forward a post to another list. Sometimes people share with friends or colleagues on one list and want the information to go no further. And creating the impression, even by accident, that another person's expertise or research is yours could be considered plagiarism.
    • It is helpful to others if you always sign your message with your name and location so we can all be better aware of who we are and where we are.
    • Be forgiving of other people's mistakes. You were a internet newbie once too! Try sending them a private email to help them out     << Back  .

How can I change my email address for the list?

Yahoo! Groups makes it easy to change the email addresses you use for subscriptions. Before you make any changes to your address, however, it's important to understand how your account works.

Your account is identified by the Yahoo! ID you use to sign in. Your preferences, profile, and email addresses are all part of your account.

Your account can have up to 5 email addresses that can be used for group subscriptions. To view the addresses linked to your account, go to My Preferences.

To change your email address, you will first need to add your new email address to your account. Skip to the next set of instructions if the address is already linked to your Yahoo! ID.

    7. The new address should be listed as "Not currently available for subscription." Click on the Edit button to the right of Email Addresses.
    8. Click on the Convert link to the right of the new email address.
    9. An email with an authorization code will be sent to the address. (It should arrive within minutes, but may take longer. Please allow up to 12 hours to receive the email.) Follow the instructions contained in the email to complete the process.

    Changing your subscription addresses:
    1. Go to My Groups
    2. Click on Edit My Groups
    3. Use the drop-down menus to select the appropriate email address for each group, and click on Save Changes.
